Choban Akoustik + Elektrik
Since 2009, Jordan Shapiro has been the driving force behind his Balkan music projects Choban Elektrik and Choban Akoustik, ensembles dedicated to reimagining the folk traditions of the Balkans through Jordan’s distinctive musical voice. Based in New York City, he leads the groups in formats ranging from a tight keyboard trio to a full six-piece band featuring violin, vocals, and horns.
Choban Elektrik highlights Jordan’s love of vintage keyboard textures—Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes, Farfisa—supported by electric bass and guitar for a bold, groove-driven sound. Choban Akoustik shifts the focus to grand piano, placing Balkan repertoire in a more intimate jazz-trio setting while retaining the rhythmic fire and melodic intricacy of the tradition.
