Jordan Shapiro is a Hudson Valley–based multi-instrumentalist and teacher. Piano was his first love—he pairs strong classical technique with an easy improvisational fluency across rock-pop, jazz, and folk traditions—but his work also spans bluegrass, Balkan, jazz, rock, zydeco, and Celtic styles.
As a bandleader, Jordan assembles groups in three-, four-, and five-piece configurations, always with a focus on musicianship, interplay, and creating sets that feel connected to the room. His projects move comfortably between original compositions, traditional repertoire, unexpected covers, and roots-based instrumental pieces shaped by years of exploring different regional traditions.
Jordan has also spent a major part of his career as a sideman, bringing his flexibility and deep stylistic vocabulary to many long-running projects. He toured for years with Project/Object, the well-known Frank Zappa tribute band; performed and recorded with guitarist Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart, Jeff Buckley); and worked with Nona Hendryx, among many others. Across countless NYC gigs—clubs, theaters, street festivals, last-minute subs—he’s built the kind of steady, adaptable musicianship that only comes from saying yes to a wide range of musical situations over many years.

As a pianist, Jordan blends a strong grounding in classical technique with a feel for improvisation and the rhythmic drive found in various folk traditions. Whether he’s at a grand piano, accordion, electric keys, or whatever instrument the performance requires, he brings a supportive, tasteful approach aimed at lifting the entire ensemble.
Jordan is also an experienced teaching artist, working in schools, community programs, and cultural organizations throughout the region. He leads workshops, interactive performances, presentations, and residencies that introduce students of all ages to folk traditions from around the world, improvisation, ensemble skills, and the creative process. His approach is hands-on, engaging, and built around making music feel accessible and welcoming.
After decades of performing, collaborating, and teaching, Jordan continues to balance bandleading, sideman work, and arts education—staying active in both the Hudson Valley and NYC communities, always guided by curiosity, craft, and the joy of playing with others.
